His biggest thrills came when former students sought him out to reminisce or share details about their current lives. He greatly valued the contribution of graduate teaching assistants, and upon his retirement from OSU asked that any tribute be directed to them. As a result, the Herbert F. Frolander Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant was established. Herb also was a great outdoorsman and naturalist. He cultivated grapes and made his own wine for many years. He loved raising and grafting fruit trees, and as a result, many of his trees bore several unusual varieties of fruit.

He could fabricate or fix most anything. Herb and Marjorie built a beautiful home where everyone was welcome, and hugs were freely distributed.
Herb spent many of his happiest times hiking, camping, fishing and hunting in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area in the Wallowa Mountains in Northeast Oregon. On any given day, Herb found beauty in ordinary things: the color contrast of the leaves, or unexpected wild cherry blossoms against the deep green of the forest. He loved the antics of all animals, and never failed to celebrate the rain as a gift for all his dear plants. He revered all life as sacred, and would go out of his way to move small creatures out of harm's way. He appreciated the value and beauty of open spaces, and fought to preserve them both in our community and beyond. He had an artist's eye, and an appreciation for the wonders nature presented. Many an abandoned cat or dog found a home over the years at the Frolanders. 'Most of all, Herb was a loving husband, father and grandfather who placed family first. He and Marjorie supported their children in every endeavor. Herb always was a great storyteller; his favorite stories involved his children, and their talents and capabilities.
