SWEET HOME Thanks in part to a $100,000 donation from an anonymous local resident, the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District is seeing a quick turn around in updating its aging ambulance fleet. In December, Fire Chief Dave Barringer said the district was faced with a fleet of vehicles that had an average of more than 150,000 miles on each unit and that doesn't count the actual number of hours vehicle engines have run only the miles the unit has been driven. Several of the older units were being taken out of service sporadically due to maintenance issues. Barringer, a Sweet Home native, became fire chief in July and quickly learned that due to the economic conditions of the last eight years and continued depressed reimbursement for services from government sources, the district had been unable to update its ambulances on schedule. Unable to purchase a new ambulance due to cost and lack of district resources, the fire district board approved the purchase of a used 2011 unit with 41,000 miles that was in Connecticut. The district paid $58,000, plus another $3,700 to have it hauled by truck to Sweet Home. It arrived this week and is being readied for service including replacing old signage and licensing.

Principal Jane Evans said the one thing that has been a struggle has been finding Spanish language materials, especially with the switch to new materials under the Common Core State Standards. "Aida Cedillo's doing a tremendous job of finding things," she said. The district intends to continue the expansion through high school. In November voters passed the $34 million Linn Benton Community College General Obligation Bond that extended a $19 million voter approved bond that passed in 2000. The cost according to supporters would be 18 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, the same as the expiring bond. Voters put the measure through by about 2,000 votes thanks to a wide majority in Benton County. The Air Force 1 Low Shoes
